Where historic canals meet world-class culture and timeless Dutch charm.

Amsterdam has a way of charming visitors that few cities can match. With its graceful canals, rich history, and vibrant culture, the Dutch capital offers experiences that stay with you long after you've left. Whether you're dancing in the streets during King's Day, gliding along historic waterways, or wandering through cobblestone neighborhoods, Amsterdam reveals itself in layers—each more enchanting than the last.
King's Day: Amsterdam in Orange
I landed in Amsterdam on April 26th with plans to explore the city's famous museums and canals before my birthday on the 28th. What I didn't realize was that I'd arrived just in time for King's Day on April 27th—and I had absolutely no idea what I was in for. Talk about perfect timing!
King's Day (Koningsdag) happens every April 27th, when the entire city transforms into a sea of orange as locals and visitors alike don the national color to celebrate the monarch's birthday. I woke up that morning to discover that all the major museums—including the Anne Frank House I'd hoped to visit—were closed for the holiday. Slightly disappointed at first, I quickly realized I was about to experience something far more unique than any museum visit.
The atmosphere was electric from early morning until late into the night. Streets became one massive street party, with live music spilling from every corner, DJs spinning sets on boats in the canals, and impromptu dance parties erupting wherever there was space. The vrijmarkt (free market) was everywhere—vintage treasures, homemade crafts, and quirky finds spread out on blankets throughout the city, with anyone and everyone setting up shop to sell anything imaginable.
What struck me most was how seriously locals take this holiday. Orange decorations hung from every window, families had clearly been preparing for weeks, and the sense of community was palpable. Even as a tourist without a stitch of orange clothing, I was welcomed into the celebration with open arms. Strangers offered me drinks, invited me to dance, and shared their orange pastries (tompoezen) with genuine enthusiasm.
If you ever plan a trip to Amsterdam, consider timing it around King's Day. Just remember: all major attractions will be closed, so embrace the street party instead. Wear orange, let go of any rigid plans, and don't be surprised when the entire city becomes your dance floor.
Seeing Amsterdam from the Water

Amsterdam's nickname, the "Venice of the North," becomes clear the moment you step onto a canal boat. The city was built around water, and exploring it from this vantage point offers a perspective you simply can't get from land.
A canal boat tour takes you through the UNESCO-listed canal ring, past the elegant 17th-century merchants' houses with their distinctive gabled facades. Your guide will point out architectural details you might otherwise miss—the narrow "neck-gable" houses designed to minimize property taxes, the ornate bell-gable rooftops, and the hooks at the top of buildings once used to hoist furniture through the windows.
As you drift under low stone bridges and past houseboats draped with flowers, you'll gain insight into Amsterdam's Golden Age, when these waterways made it one of the world's most important trading ports. Evening cruises are particularly magical, when the bridges light up with strings of lights and the reflections dance on the water's surface.
Whether you choose a glass-topped boat, an open-air vessel, or a romantic candlelit dinner cruise, seeing Amsterdam from its canals provides context for everything else you'll experience in the city.
Exploring Amsterdam on Foot
While the canals offer beauty, Amsterdam's real character emerges when you explore on foot. This is a city best experienced at street level, where you can peek into cozy brown cafés, discover hidden courtyards (begijnhofs), and feel the pulse of daily life.
Start in the Jordaan, once a working-class neighborhood now filled with art galleries, vintage boutiques, and welcoming cafés. The narrow streets here wind unpredictably, encouraging you to get pleasantly lost. Duck into one of the hofjes—charitable almshouses built around peaceful gardens that feel worlds away from the bustling streets just outside their gates.
Wander through the Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes), a compact shopping district where independent boutiques, specialty food shops, and tiny museums occupy historic buildings. Stop for a stroopwafel at a market stall or warm yourself with a thick Dutch pea soup at a traditional eetcafé.
Don't miss the quieter Eastern Docklands, where modern architecture contrasts dramatically with the historic center. Here, innovative housing projects and waterfront restaurants show Amsterdam's contemporary face. And everywhere you walk, you'll share the streets with an endless stream of cyclists—a reminder that this is a city scaled for humans, not cars.
The best walks in Amsterdam have no fixed route. Follow your curiosity down a promising side street, cross a bridge because the view looks interesting, or simply sit on a canal-side bench and watch Amsterdam flow past. The city rewards wanderers.
My Amsterdam Takeaway
Amsterdam works its magic through contrasts—the wild energy of King's Day and the peaceful glide of a canal boat, the grandeur of historic architecture and the intimacy of walking its narrow lanes. Each perspective reveals something different about this layered, livable city that has figured out how to honor its past while embracing its future.
Whether you're planning a long stay or a quick visit, make time for all three of these experiences. Dance in orange with the locals, float through the canal ring at golden hour, and walk until your feet hurt and you've discovered your own favorite hidden corner of Amsterdam. The city has been charming visitors for centuries, and it shows no signs of stopping.
