Sicily is a land of contrasts — a crossroads of civilizations where Greek temples sit alongside Baroque palaces, bustling markets echo with Arabic influences, and meals stretch into celebrations. If you’re planning the ultimate Sicilian adventure, here’s a *9-day travel itinerary that takes you to the dramatic slopes of Mount Etna and over to Palermo’s vibrant streets. From seaside escapes to charming city streets, discover Sicily’s cultural treasures and hidden gems with this guide
Day 1 - Arrive in Taormina

A seaside jewel, Taormina is yours for the taking! Explore the elegant boutiques along Corso Umberto. Delve into the history and culture of this ancient town. A must-visit is the beautifully preserved ruins of the Teatro di Taromina. Built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, Taormina’s Teatro has one of the most breathtaking backdrops in the world: Mount Etna smoking in the distance.

Imagine masked actors performing against the backdrop of glorious Ionian sea views more than 2,500 years ago. Afterwards, revel in Piazza IX Aprile, the heart of Taormina - nicknamed the “balcony over the sea.” It’s where locals gather for sunsets, music, and views that blend history, myth, and magic in one spot. End the evening by enjoying fine cuisine with an authentic Sicilian dinner and entertainment in Castelmola.
Day 2 - Mount Etna & Godfather Villages

Drive (or join a guided tour) up the slopes of Mount Etna. Along the way, enjoy views of lava fields and vineyards. Arrive at Rifugio Sapienza (South Side Base). This is the main access point for Etna excursions.

Enjoy a traditional Sicilian meal: antipasti with cheeses, cured meats, and olives, homemade pasta, and of course, cannoli or granita for dessert.
Savoca
Visit Bar Vitelli, where Michael Corleone asked for Apollonia’s hand. Have a coffee or lemon granita under the same archway. Afterwards, walk to the Church of San Nicolò, where the wedding scene was filmed. The panoramic views from here are stunning. Stroll the quiet medieval streets, largely unchanged since Coppola filmed here.
Forza d’Agrò
Explore the hilltop alleys used as stand-ins for Corleone. Visit the Church of Sant’Agostino and wander the town’s medieval squares. This village is less visited than Savoca, so it feels even more like stepping back in time.
Day 3 - Syracuse & Ortigia

Once a major Mediterranean power and the birthplace of Archimedes, the historic city of Syracuse takes center stage for insights into its colorful past. It is one of the few places where you can stand in a Greek amphitheater, see a Roman forum, walk through Arab markets, admire Norman churches, and sip coffee in Baroque piazzas—all within a day.
Start your day exploring the Greek Theatre (Teatro Greco) – One of the largest Greek theaters in the world (5th century BC). In summer, it still hosts classical plays under the stars. Follow this with a visit to the Roman Amphitheatre – Built later (3rd century AD), it was used for gladiator battles and spectacles. End at the Ear of Dionysius (Orecchio di Dionisio) – A massive cave with perfect acoustics; legend says tyrant Dionysius used it to spy on prisoners.
Afterwards, head over to Ortigia Island to discover Duomo di Siracusa (Cathedral of Syracuse) – A masterpiece of layered history: once a Temple of Athena, later converted into a Baroque cathedral. Then, make your way over to the Temple of Apollo – One of Sicily’s oldest Greek temples, right at Ortigia’s entrance. End the day wandering the Baroque Streets & Piazzas – Especially Piazza del Duomo, considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy.
Day 4 - Catania

Catania, at the foot of Mount Etna, is one of Sicily’s most vibrant cities — full of Baroque squares, bustling markets, and unforgettable food. Here’s how to enjoy it in just one day.
Start in Piazza del Duomo, home to the cathedral and the lava-stone Elephant Fountain. Stroll Via Etnea, Catania’s main street, and grab a classic Sicilian treat.
Later, dive into La Pescheria, Catania’s lively fish market. Try local street food like arancini or cipollina catanese while soaking up the chaotic, authentic vibe.
Follow this with exploring Castello Ursino, the Roman Theatre, and the vast Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena, a UNESCO-listed Baroque gem. In just one day, Catania offers a taste of everything Sicily is known for — history, food, and a lively local spirit.
Day 5 - Agrigento & Valley of the Temples

Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples is one of Sicily’s most unforgettable sites — a UNESCO World Heritage wonder where ancient Greek ruins rise above olive groves and the Mediterranean Sea.
Start your day at the Temple of Juno and the perfectly preserved Temple of Concordia, then wander past the Temple of Heracles and the citrus-filled Garden of Kolymbethra.
After a Sicilian lunch of pasta alla Norma or fresh seafood, explore the colossal Temple of Zeus and the iconic columns of Castor and Pollux. End the day in Agrigento’s old town, strolling Via Atenea with a gelato in hand before returning to your hotel balcony to watch the sun set over the Tyrrhenian Sea - where golden light transforms into pure magic.
Day 6 - Erice & Arrival in Palermo

Climb to Erice, a hilltop medieval town of cobbled streets and sweeping views, known as the “Town of a Hundred Churches.” Visit the Temple of Venus. In the afternoon, continue on to Palermo, Sicily’s vibrant capital. A city of contrasts - Arab domes beside Baroque churches, bustling street markets next to elegant piazzas, and food that tells the story of centuries of cultures.
Begin your journey in the heart of Palermo at the Palermo Cathedral, a striking blend of Norman, Gothic, and Baroque architecture. Don’t miss the rooftop climb for panoramic views across the city. From here, make your way to the Palazzo dei Normanni, once the seat of Sicilian kings. Inside lies the Cappella Palatina, a jewel box of Byzantine mosaics shimmering in gold — one of the most breathtaking sights in Sicily.
Day 7 - Palermo

Spend your day exploring Palermo’s stunning Baroque treasures. Tour the grand Teatro Massimo, Italy’s largest opera house, then wander to Quattro Canti, a lively square surrounded by ornate 17th-century facades. Just around the corner, admire the marble statues of Piazza Pretoria at the so-called “Fountain of Shame.”
Later, stop by the Martorana or San Cataldo, both UNESCO-listed churches with dazzling mosaics and Arab-Norman architecture. In the evening, walk along the Foro Italico, Palermo’s seafront promenade, as the sun dips into the Mediterranean. For dinner, head into the La Kalsa district, where lively piazzas come alive with wine bars and trattorias. Finish your night with a classic cannolo or a slice of cassata siciliana.
Day 8 - Cefalù

On Sicily’s northern coast, Cefalù is a medieval gem where sandy beaches meet winding cobblestone lanes. The highlight is the Norman Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its golden Byzantine mosaics. Stroll through the old town’s streets filled with boutiques and cafés, visit the Medieval Wash House, and soak up local charm at every turn. Relax by heading over to the Lungomare beach for a swim or enjoy the sea with views of colorful houses and the dramatic cliff of La Rocca rising above the town. Visit for history, culture, or pure seaside bliss.
Day 9 - Farewell Sicily
Enjoy one last espresso and cannolo before saying goodbye. Sicily’s mix of history, sunshine, and unforgettable flavors will leave you planning your next visit.
